Like Wailuku, Waihe'e and Waikapu, it was one of the most densely populated native areas in pre-contact times. The Waiehu River was one of the Na Wai Eha, rivers that fed the Central area of Maui and supported a major native agricultural center. The ruling chiefs fought for control of the whole region because of the rich productivity of this land.
Waiehu, north of Wailuku, also has the only municipal golf course on the island.
