Stronger than Cancer Walk: 3-Day Maui Event Planned to Raise Early Detection Awareness

Posted: September 11, 2020 by Coldwell Banker Island Properties

For Coldwell Banker Island Properties real estate agent Connie Magnuson, this is a year to celebrate. Connie has reached that important milestone of five years from the completion of treatment for breast cancer. In a year that has been very challenging, Connie wanted to focus on doing something positive, so when fellow breast cancer survivor and good friend Linda Lafragiola — who has participated in 11 Susan G. Komen 3-Day Walks — had the idea of doing a 60-mile, 3-Day walk on Maui, Connie was all in.

The SGK Walks for 2020 have all been canceled due to COVID 19. However, the need for research, resources, treatment, and screening for breast cancer continues even during a pandemic. Magnuson and Lafragiola want to do their part to bring awareness and raise funds to support the cause. Together they are mapping out 20-mile routes for each of the three days weaving throughout different areas of the island including the west side Kapalua to Lahaina, north side Paia to Wailuku, and south side Kihei to Makena. They will walk close to 500 miles during the training weeks preceding the event which will be held November 20-22, 2020.

Walking for 20 miles three days in a row will be challenging physically, which is why they are calling the event the "Stronger Than Cancer Walk."

Both women feel fortunate to have been diagnosed early, to have beaten cancer, and to be healthy and strong enough to complete this 60-mile challenge. They are raising awareness and funds so that others also have the opportunity for early detection and life-saving treatment. With many people in Hawaii losing jobs and health care the need is more important than ever. The "Stronger Than Cancer Walk" is raising funds for Susan G. Komen Hawaii to provide support and resources on a local level.

Magnuson and Lafragiola welcome anyone who wants to come and cheer them on during the event or give a honk and a wave of encouragement if you see them walking down the road.

Donations in support of their Walk can be made to their fundraising site: Stronger than Cancer 60
